My campaigns end up in the spam folder

Last update: 06-03-2025

It is clear that the main objective of your email marketing strategy is that your mailings reach your subscribers' inboxes without any problems. As we discussed in "My subscribers are not receiving my mailings" anti spam filters can be difficult to predict, but even so there are some guidelines to follow if you want to avoid your campaigns end up in the spam folder.

Each email client has its own criteria for what is spam and what is not, but there are some common criteria that we can follow to avoid compromising the deliverability of our campaigns. Here are some basic guidelines and best practices to ensure that your mailing gets past spam filters:

  • Avoid using capital letters when it is not necessary: Do not overuse capital letters, especially in the subject line. Avoid using all capital letters in the subject line and pre-header and make sure that the length of the subject line does not exceed the editor's recommendations.

  • Beware of strange characters: Do not overuse special characters such as percentage symbols (%), currency symbols (€), exclamation marks (!) or asterisks (*).

  • Avoid overuse of words such as "free" or "gift": There are words that set off alarm bells in spam filters. Free, bonus, gift, promotion... these are words that spammers use to attract the attention of users and an excessive use of them can cause filters to send your campaign directly to the spam folder.

  • Compensate the image and text ratio: Some filters often classify image-only campaigns as spam. To avoid this, we recommend that you keep a balanced text to image ratio. 50/50 is a very good ratio.

  • Do not use link shorteners: Make sure that the links you add to your campaign are as direct as possible. Do not use URL shorteners... Avoid adding broken or expired links, use the link checker to detect links that do not work properly.

  • Send content adapted to your subscribers: Segment correctly to send the right content to the right subscribers. If you send content of the wrong subject to your contacts, it is likely that they will end up marking you as spam and this will affect future mailings.

  • Include the text version of the email: At the bottom of the Acrelia News editor you have the possibility to generate the content of your newsletter in plain text format. This way you will generate an alternative text to your campaign in HTML format and you will add deliverability points.

  • Use the anti-spam checker: Acrelia News offers you an anti-spam checker that we recommend you to use before sending any campaign. If you click on the " Check spam keywords" icon Verify sending in the right-side panel of the editor, the platform will analyse and check all the content of your campaign and will tell you what points you can improve. If you follow all of the above tips, you will ensure that the spam checker always marks 0 out of 5.

Pay special attention to respect the will of your subscribers and never send to contacts for whom you do not have explicit consent. In addition to having a serious legal problem, if many users mark your campaign as SPAM, it is possible that the mail servers will end up blocking your mailings to all recipients.
